Last night Alex and I had a meeting with one of the head Pediatrician's at the hospital to get some more information and talk about Gabby's kidney issue. We are so thankful that we did this because the doctor was very helpful and explained to us the real issue in much greater detail. We found out that what she really has is called a Multicystic Dystplastic Kidney, which means that sometime early on in development something was blocked within the tubes that filter everything from the kidneys to the bladder. The blockage causes a backup into the kidney which then causes multiple cysts to form. The blood flow then ceases to that kidney which causes it to stop growing and to actually shrink in size. We were told that the kidney can even at some point disappear. This is not a genetic condition, it happens randomly and almost always during development in the womb. He assured us that there is no reason to be concerned about the other kidney developing the same problem in the future and it is not something that she would pass on to her future children. The healthy kidney just knows to compensate and it will do the full function of 2 kidney's. Pretty amazing how our Creator works!
The term we were given earlier, Polycystic Kidney Disease was not the correct condition and we are so glad to be clear. PKD is actually a much worse disease that affects both kidneys and is often fatal in infants.
After Gabby is born she will have an ultrasound and a urine analysis to make sure that everything does function correctly with her healthy kidney. They can tell already that while in the womb it is functioning well because the level of amniotic fluid is normal.
Praise God for good doctors, clear ultrasounds, and for bodies that work in a way that only He could have put together!
Thank you to all who have been praying for us and our little Gabriela Pearl. We are so excited to meet her in 6 days!

Yay! Great news! Gary's dad has a similar condition, born with 1 kidney. He has been healthy all his life. Only a few more short days! Hang in there :)
That is WONDERFUL news. I am glad that is isn't something more severed. We are still praying for her!
Praise the Lord!! It's so true what you said about how our Creator works. We are so thankful that you have more answers/clarity and that Gabby will have no concerns. God is Good! And poor Alex . . . perfect timing is right! We will pray for no surgery and a quick recovery as we both know you'll need help when Gabby arrives! I'm so glad you started to blog!
